The Negev: exceptional trek east of the Makhtesh Ramon. Dec 7th – 14th 2015

December 7th – 14th 2015

Discover the hidden gems of the Israeli Negev desert over a week-long trek in a more remote but spectacular part of the Negev.   You will see breathtaking landscapes, fascinating rock formations, hidden water pools, deep gorges, ancient cisterns and much more as we trek across the Negev, heading east above the Ramon and towards the Arava valley. Guaranteed to be the perfect desert experience !

Some landmarks of the trip include: Wadi Hava, Saraf,  Mount Masor, Ein Um Saleh, Holit waterhole and the Qatsra Nabatean station along the ancient incense road.

It is possible to join the trek only for the first 5 days, from the the 7th – 11th, or the last three days, 12th -14th of December.

NOTE: this is a challenging hike that requires being able to walk on average 20 km a day, over different types of terrain and some elevation.

THE ITINERARY:
7th: Departure from Midreshet Ben Gurion, Divshon Ascent, Aqev spring and pool, camping at Ein Ziq.
8th: Descending the Thirsty Snake trail to Ein Sharav, Hava fissures.
9th: Wadi Hava, including Hava waterhole and spring.
10th: Wadi Hagor, Wadi Saraf.
11th: Wadi Masor, Mt. Masor, camp at Wadi Marzeva campsite.
Option to sleep in country lodge in the Arava.
Possibility to end the hike.
12th: Um Saleh spring, Wadi Marzeva.
13th: Wadi Enmar, “Gev Holit”.
14th: Wadi Maok, Mt. Masa, Qatsra Nabatean site, shuttle to Moa site and to Moshav Tsofar, from which it is possible to take a bus to Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.

LOGISTICS:
During the day, you will only need to carry a day pack, as a vehicle will transfer our DSC04901gear between each campsite.
The day will start early, around 5.30 am, and we will walk between 17 to 23 km each day. The pace will not be too fast, and there will be short periods of rest with a long lunch break. A delicious field dinner will be prepared by the logistics team and will be ready for us when we arrive at the end of the day’s hike.

LODGING:
We will camp outdoors.
On the 5th night it is possible to stay in a room in a country lodge for an additional cost (see below). We will make the reservation and provide transportation to the room after dinner, and back in the morning.

A tent and sleeping foam mattress can be rented on site.

The country lodge on the 5th night costs 350 NIS per person when a room is shared, otherwise for single occupancy there is 250 NIS supplement for a total of 600 NIS. These prices do include transporatation from the campsite in the evening and back in the morning.

WHAT TO BRING:
 - Passport, Health insurance
 - Water bottles to carry up to 4.5 litres of water
 - Hat, good hiking shoes, sandals for the evening
 - Comfortable day pack
 - Good sleeping bag
 - Sleeping pad and tent (optional - can be rented on site) 
 - Warm clothes for the evening (including warm hat, gloves, scarf, fleece...)
 - Raincoat 
 - Towel and toiletries 
 - Toilet paper and matches 
 - Flashlight and extra batteries 
 - Sunscreen 
 - Insect repellent 
 - Personal first aid and medications, spare glasses 
 - Snacks (dried fruits, nuts...) 
 - Plate, soup bowl, spoon, fork, knife
